There is no greater feeling than becoming enraptured by a good book. But only a few times in my life have I been completely consumed by a novel that I ended up reading it within a single day. Here are the three books in recent memory that I consumed in less than 24 hours.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
I clearly remember the day that I read this book. I decided to bring this book with me to read in between classes. I started reading at around 9 AM, and I finished the last page at 9 PM. Captivated is the word I would use to describe how I read this book. The writing style and the absurdity of the narrator’s life had me hooked in a way no other book had. In a novel with such little plot, I was completely consumed and hooked by every sentence. The way the author could turn a description of going to the corner bodega and write it with so much detail and lyricism was art. This book is weird, beautiful, and one that I couldn’t put down.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
A few years ago, I decided to dip my toes into a John Steinbeck novel with Of Mice and Men. With only a hundred and a handful of pages, I finished this book in one sitting. I distinctly remember finishing this book with a small voice in the back of my head asking, “that’s it?” This was one of those books that did not really hit me until a few days after I read it. But it wasn’t until days later that the story really sunk in. The characters, the feeling of helplessness, Candy’s dog, all of it stuck with me in such vivid detail that I still think about this book today.
Milk Fed by Melissa Broder
Similar to My Year of Rest and Relaxation, I started this book in the morning and finished it late at night the same day. Published in 2021, this novel blends food, love, religion, and relationships into one emotionally raw novel. The descriptions of the food were so specific and vivid that I ended up taking a break between reading to get some French fries because I got so hungry.
