My Reading Goals for 2025

I cannot believe that 2025 is in just a few days. This year was a big one for me: I got a new job, traveled to Switzerland, and bought a new car. But sadly, this was not a great year for my reading goals. I only read 12 books and almost all of them were nonfiction, which is a far cry from the 55 books I read in 2023. But a new year means new reading goals. I’m ready to focus on myself and get back to doing what I love, which is curling up with a good book.

Tackling the Physical TBR

My main goal this year is to get through my massive pile of books I have bought over the years. For example…my pile of brand new books that I bought at the LA Time’s Festival of Books that I haven’t touched since April of 2023. Oops!

So, I want to prioritize reading books that I already own. Exclusively reading books that I own is not a sustainable goal for the whole year, but I will focus on reading books already on my shelves and limit how many new books I buy. Refraining from buying new books is easy with my extensive list of library cards, but what will be more difficult is not getting distracted by new releases.

I am hoping that this goal will help me get through my physical to-read pile and downsize my library, as I can donate any books I didn’t particularly like. I am also hoping this will also help me not be overwhelmed with my book picks. This way, I can just focus on one or two books at a time and not be distracted by new books.

Getting Back into Fiction

My second goal for this year is to dive back into the world of fiction. 2024 was a slim year for books, and especially for fiction. While I love nonfiction, I have so many highly-rated works of fiction that I have been wanting to read sitting on my shelves for far too long. From two (!) recent releases from Ali Hazelwood to my collection of Shakespeare plays that have been begging me to finally crack into them, I have a world of stories awaiting me in 2025.
